BALLOT SCANDAL
ACTION BY LABOUR UNION. DEALING WITH OFFENDERS. 8Y CABLE —PRESS ABSOGIATIOB —COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Aug. 20. A meeting of the executive of the Australian Railways Union considered the case of Buckley (the State secretary). The executive decided that Buckley failed to clear himself at the Australian Labour Party’s State Conference of irregular practices in connection with free selection ballots and the making of ballot boxes with sliding panels. Therefore he would be deemed not a fit and proper person to hold office as State secretary of the Railway Union. Regarding D. Maguire (the State president of the union), against whom certain charges had been made, the general president stated that there was evidence of antipathy towards him in certain quarters, the charges apparently arising primarily out of his association with Buckley. Realising his position, and in the interests of the progress of the union, Maguire had tendered his resignation as State president and as a member of the Australian executive. The resignations had been accepted. Received August 21, 9.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 21. The executive resolved to expel Buckley from membership of- the Australian Railways Union, and that he be dismissed from all offices forthwith.
