“This case goes fairly close to culpable neglect,” said the Melbourne coroner at an inquest on Muriel Hayes, aged 5, of St. Albans. “It certainly discloses gross ignorance,” he added, “but I am not going so far as to find criminal neglect.” A verdict of death due to shock and extensive burns was recorded. Evidence showed that the child had been placed over hot water as treatment for constipation, and was afterwards found to have been badly scalded. She died the next day. Bertha Hayes, stepmother of the child, said she iirepared the water, and did not think it too hot. Florence Hodson, a married woman, said the child objected to the treatment, so that Mrs. Hayes and herself held her over the water. ‘‘She was struggling with pain all the time,” said witness.
