FIRES.
BIG BLAZE IN AUCKLAND. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND. Aug. 19. A fire in Wright’s buildings, a fivestorey brick structure in Fort Street, at 2 o’clock this morning, resulted in the greater part being gutted, but beyond this the brigade saved the building from destruction. The stock of Speddings. Ltd., general merchants, was considerably damaged by fire and water, and the offices of the Charles Haines Advertising Agency were burnt out. The offices damaged included the London and Lancashire Insurance Co., the Health Department, and National Mortgage Agency. The building was owned by A. B. Wright, Ltd. Other premises damaged by the fire in Wright’s buildings were: Robertson and P'olsen, insured for £350 in the New Zealand office; R. C. Postles, produce broker, and Donald McLeod, sharebroker. The insurance on Speddings’ was £750 in the South British. LARGE HOUSE GUTTED.
PALMERSTON N., Aug. 19. An outbreak of fire occurred early this morning in a ten-roomed hquse in Park Road, occupied by A. J. Taylor. The building was gutted and the occupants bad a narrow escape. Two daughters, somewhat dazed by the smoke, had difficulty in locating the window, but Taylor junior plunged through the flames and managed to get them to safety.
