MR. -MACDONALD’S LETTERS TO FRENCH AND BELGIAN PREMIERS. fSV CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Aug. 19, 11.5 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 18. Mr Ramsey. MacDonald sent letters to MM. Herriot and Theunis, emphasising that the British Government had never recognised the legality of the occupation of the Ruhr. The British Government, without prejudice to the position which they and their predecessors had taken up with regard to the interpretation or the Versailles 1 leaty, but being anxious to see the Dawes Report in operation, simply note the agreement between the occupying Powers and the German Government that the occupation shall not extend beyond twelve months, and strongly urge the Governments concerned to take every possible step to hasten the evacuation, as the British Government is of opinion that continued occupation may prejudice the working of the Dawes report and jeopardise the arrangements agreed upon at the London Conference. M. Herriot went to Paris this morning.—Reuter.
