EDUCATION BOARD.
▼ -MONTHLY MEETINCI. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs S. G. Smith, M.P. (chairman), A. Lees. H. Dempsey, P. J. H. White, and li. ,J. Deare. Leave of absence’ was granted to Messrs F. H. Sims and R. Masters, M.P. On the recommendation of the senior inspector (Mr J. A. Valentine) the following appointments were made: Huiakama, head teacher, Mr Launcelot B. Galbraith- Tokirima, sole teacher, Mr .Robert C. Smith; Central, infant mistress. Miss M. H. Papps; Mokan, sole teacher, Miss Thyrza Sage; Huirangi, assistant, Miss Annie Mace; Manaia, third assistant, Miss M. B. Simpson; Opunake, special assistant, Mr Eric M. Walden. No application was received for the position of assistant atTahora. It was decided to fill the position temporarily until the end of the year, and then to re-advertise it. The chairman reported that he had made the following appointments during the month: Otunui, sole teacher, . Mrs C. Street; Central, assistant, Miss J. R. Mitclieil; Newall, head teacher, Miss E. Surman ; Tokirima, sole teacher, Miss M. J. Hunt; Opunake, headmaster, Mr IV. A. Curteis; Te Kiri, assistant, Miss I. Richards; Pnniwhakau, sole teacher, Miss A. Dromgool; Mangakara, sole teacher, Mrs Dons (August 1 to 5); Mangakara, sol 1 © teacher. Miss 0. H. Davies (August 6) ; Aukopae, sole teacher, Miss Uden ; Vogeltown, assistant, Mrs £)eightou; Ngaere, assistant, Miss M. B. Simpson ; Waitara, assistant. Miss Anderson (August 1); Tarata, sole teacher, Miss M. -Fahev (August 1 to 14); Fraser Road, assistant. Miss P. Surgenor; Ahit-iti, sole teacher, Miss Gunnell ; Hurford, sole teacher. Miss Rawson (August 1 to 15); Hurford Road, sole teacher, Miss Spence (August 18 to 22); Rangi, sole teacher, Miss Tompkins. The following resignations were* received Miss G. M. Barak, assistant, Ohura; Miss S. E. Farquhar, assistant, Otakcho; Mrs N. A. Corcoran, eighth assistant, Hawera; Mr W. A. Dean, agricultural instructor, Stratford centre. The attendance officer (Mr G. Pascoe) reported that he had sent out 50 irregular attendance notices during the month. Twenty-four schools had been inspected, and the attendance had. been satisfactory. NEW WORK. The architect (M,r C. H. Moore) reported on new work as follows: Eltham new school. —I propose to start on this work immediately. We have a good deal of material on order. Hawera partition. —The partition asked for was brought before a committee of the Board, and it was decided to do the work out of maintenance. It will not he a costly matter. The application made to the Department for a grant to- cover tlie cost of erecting a partition in one of the infants’ rooms has been refused. It will be necessary to decide what is to be done. In the meantime I have authority to improve the lighting, and this matter is under consideration. Workshop.—The workshop plant is in good order. The staff have been busy on the sections of the Central movable class rooms and sundry school furniture. We have the joinery on hand for the Awakino and Norfolk residences* The joinery for the Eltham new school will also be started shortly. Good progress has been made with the combustion chamber fo.r dealing with the shavings and dust. General repairs have been effected at Pihama, Otakeho, Ngaere and Eltham schools.. The report was adopted. GENERAL MATTERS. For tlie carrying on of secondary classes at Opunake it was decided to accept a lease of the Anglican Sunday School building at a rental of £39 per annum, suniect to the approval of the Department. The matter of advertising foir a new agricultural instructor at Stratford in place of Mr W. A. Dean, who lias resigned, was left in the hands of Messrs White and Lees. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the matter of e-f----leet ing repairs and making renewals at the following schools was referred la the architect:—Waiongona, Manaia. Lincoln, Finnertv, Kapuni, Oakura, Eltham, Korito Franldey.
It was resorted that in view of the large amount of work done by voluntary contributions at Tawhiti. the action of the chairman in authorising additions to the shelter sheds be approved.
A report on the proposed school at Tuhua was submitted by Mr F. H. Sims. The senior inspector, after consideration of the facts as supplied by Air Sims, said he was prepared to recommend the establishment of a school, and accordingly the Board decided to apply to the Department for approval. The secretary was instructed to write to the Department asking what action was being taken with regard to the establishment of a district high school at Afanaia. On the motion of Art Lees, the secretary was instructed to make arrangements with Air Davis for the conveyance of the Glen Hoad children.— News.
