RUGBY FOOTBALL. TWO GREAT CONTESTS. Saturday was an interesting day . at Now Plymouth, for two capital matches were played, both of which the large number, of people present irom all parts thoroughly appreciated. Both were keenly and strenuously contested, and both, despite adverse ground conditions, produced a. very good and interesting display of footbau. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. TARANAKI (18) Y. WANGANUI (9). A GOOD DISPLAY. The interprovinoial match Ire tween the old-time rivals. Wanganui and Taranaki, produced a fast and keen game, which, considering the unfavourable condition of the ground, was of a very good standard of play, and kept the spectators interested and entlnisiastic throughout. Though Taranaki proved generally superior in all places of play, their victory was largely due to the splendid dash of their forwards, who dominated for a considerable portion of the game, and were constantly dangerous. Johnston and Funis away in a passing moyement, which ended in a line out in the Blue’s twenty-five From the throw-in the ball went across the home hacks to the opposite side, where, from a penalty, Beilis made a great kick up the line. Beilis and Johnstone headed the Wanganui pack in a forward rush which gained ground tilL Walters and Paterson commenced a counter, which Collier checked with a mark and found touch at half-way. From Johnston and Ennis, the ball reached Ross, who made a dash, but found Hartley waiting. Just inside half-wav Beilis was penalised, and Sinclair made another good effort, which fell a few feet short of the goal. McAuliffe, Blyth and Cox showed in a swift bout, ■ which invaded the home quarter, where Sinclair lined from a mark by Ennis, the home forwards made another aggressive movement, which ended a few yards from the line, when Evans was checked h? Hall, who lined. Kissick broke through the line-out, but McAuliffe retrieved neatly, the same player bringing EnnL down when he fielded the punt ano made a dash. Boyd tried to relieve a dribble, which gained ground till Ennis marked, and the Yellow pack again made a sweeping onslaught. Evans headed in Wanganui’s quarter, and sent the ball across, to be narrowly beaten for the touch down by Hall. The home forwards continued the pressure, but were eventually sent back by Wanganui long-kicking, ‘ while the forwards, alter a scrimmage, went to the other end. Here Cox caught the doience napping, when he suit a wide pass to- Collier, who raced over near the corner, the scorer failing to convert.

A scrum right on the line gave the Yellows an opportunity which was spqilt by handling, the penalty allowing Beilis to relieve. Stemming a following attack-. Beilis made a run half-way and passed to Hiroti. to Collier, to Johnstone, who was held up when almost on his objective, and for a time Taranaki defended desperately. Kimis and Sinclair in turn stopped Cox from crossing, and the former heat Boyd with a foreo. Half-time sounded without further result. guard in movements which taxed the defence. At half-way he intercepted a pass by Jeffries, and after a great burst gave a clear run to Bennett, who finished the effort with a merited try. Hiroti checked, but Blyth was ruled offside, and Johnston failed to goal with a long kick. Oliver effected a pretty opening and sent Ross away accompanied by Robinson, who was forced into touch by Hartley. Shortley after Meuli received via Johnston and Ennis, but fell a yard short- of the line, and in recovering! was penalised. Beilis’ kick sent the I invaders back, but- they quickly returned, and from a line-out close up Kissick got possession, and again the home forwards were successful, the touch down being secured by Hunt. Kissick, Robinson and Walters led a relieving offensive, ami then Johnston cut through in a- corkscrew run which baffled the defence until checked by Hall, and Collier lined outside the danger zone. Beilis, Boyd and Hiroti essayed an ' attack, but a swift counter saw Oliver, Johnston. In the second spell School opened with a fine passing rush, and Turei | was called on to save several times, and lie did not fail. Then the challengers’ hacks got into their stride, and a fine movement nearly ended in a. score. New 'Plymouth retaliated, and Turei was called on to save on several occasions. Well outside the 25 flag New Plymouth had a free kick, and Mackay made a great attempt to convert. The reds came through’with great dash, Iforowai and Tibbie heading a fine forward rush. Petty saved finely. Again Te Ante hacks were sent away, and Smith. Seymour and Kereopa participated in a rush which" was almost successful. Again they came downfield. and again Petty saved in great style, getting his kicks away very accurately. W’anoa put in a nice run, and play was for a time fast and keen. School forwards went upheld in a great dash, and the ball coming out to Loveridge lie made a nice dash and passed to Mackay. who. cutting in, nearly got across. Rods came hack, but a bad pass spoilt a good movement. and Mackay securing ran and passed to Loveridge. When just within striking distance a pass forward spoilt a good opportunity. Following up the free kick, Rum secured and made a nice run, and sending to Wanoa. that hefty forward almost got across. Long kicks* were exchanged between Petty and Turei. and then the red forward rushed down, and for a time had School penned on the line. A free kick gave welcome relief, hut- hack came the Te Aute forwards till Tiplady and Gibson in a good dash relieved the position. Only for a minute, however.* for using' their weight and dash Te Aute forced School back, and a grim struggle took place just in front of the goal. School then j cleared in great style, hut not to he denied the red forwards, led by Wanoa and Kercopa, ngni nattacked, and Seymour made a nice dash for the line. He was collared, and a free kick gave School relief. Once more the College forwards came through, and. Turei made a dashing run. and kicked well down.
