Miguel Maluquer, Spanish Consul, and Raymon de Torrents, another Spaniard, whom the Canadian Mounted Police apprehended after a year’s pursuit in Europe, were charged at Montreal with importing narcotics into Canada. Both were found guilty and sentenced to six months’ gaol. The trial lasted over two months.

The accused countered the charges by asserting that their arrest was illegal, because it was made by the invasion of the traditionally inviolate premises of the consulate.
