DRIVERS’ WAGES.
APPLICATION FOR NEW AWARD. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. Aug.- 15. The Arbitration Court continued the hearing of the application by the Drivers’ Federation for a. new Dominion award. The existing wages, according to witnesses, ranged from £4 5s to £4 155,. the award rate being a minimum of £3 17s. There was difficulty in living on the wages received, and damage was done to clothes and boots by the materials carried, such as lime, cement and artificial manures. One witness declared that a general driver was a sort of Jack of all trades, a shipping clerk, a railway clerk, labourer and carter combined.
