PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.

MOTOR SPEED CONTESTS. (By Telegraph— Special to Star ) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. Hie attention of the Government has been drawn to the practice of speed contests by motorists, and the question ot making adequate provision will be considered when the Motor Vehicles Bill is being dealt with, states the MinlStei of Internal Affairs, in reply to a question by the member for the Bav of Islands.

CROWN land revaluations. There are approximately 35,000 Oioun tenants in the Dominion of whom soldier settlers number a little under 5000. It would therefore be a very lengthy and expensive matter to revalue the lands held by civilians in the same manner as lands held by soldier settlers, states the Minister of Lands, who points out that the civilian lessee has a statutory right to a revaluation when he has held the land sufficiently long to enable it to be seen whether the land was properly valued when disposed of to him. THE DEER PEST.

Rallow deer should be regarded as a pest in the same way as rabbits, was the opinion of Mr Edie (Bruce), who urged the complete removal of protection.

The lion. Mr "Bollard (Minister of Internal Affairs) replied: Protection has already been removed on both red and fallow deer in various areas in the South Island, including an area in the vicinity of the Blue Mountains. The Government has granted £IOOO for the payment of bonuses for the destruction of deer in the districts affected, the amount available being allotted in proportion to the approximate number of deer in the different districts. It is regretted that it is not possible to provide free ammunition, but the Defence Department will supply an acclimatisation society with ammunition at cost price.
