WEST COAST LEASES.
PAYMENT OF COMPENSATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star). , Y\ ELLINGTON, Aug. 14. Minister for Native Affairs was asked by Mr O. Haw ken (Egmont) when it is intended to nay' out the moneys due to lessees for their improvements under the West Coast Settlement Act, a s these leases have now teiminuted, and the lessees are waiting far their money. The Minister’s reply was that a number of ten-year leases of sections in the West Coast settlement reserves expired on June 30 last, and the lessees m accordance with the terms of therir leases, were entitled to be paid full compensation for permanent improvements on. the lands at the termination of these leases. The moneys to lie paid are to be determined by three valuers who have been for some time engaged in making the necessary valuations and in those cases in which the valuers awards have been actually received by the native trustee the moneys were immediately paid over to the lessees. As soon as the remaining assessments are received from the valuers compensation moneys will be at once paid to the persons entitled to receive them
