LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mails which left Auckland on July 8, via Vancouver, arrived at London on August 9. A Jersey Cattle Club, to work in conjunction with the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association, has been formed at Wanganui. In the Magistrate’s Court, New Plymouth (says the Herald), before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., yesterday morning, Alex Ker was charged with stealing a suit of clothes valued at £5, the property of Ernest Clare, Eitham. On the application of the police he was remanded to appear at. Hawera.

A boy named Athol Roberts, son of Mr A-. C. Roberts, Stratford, received a severe kick from a horse while on his way from school on Wednesday. He received medical attention, but will be confined to his home for some days.—Post. During the six months January-June of this year 1862 pianos were imported, valued at ’£92,787 (an average of less than £SO), while the value of other musical instruments imported during the same period was £119,861, or £41,000 in excess of the corresponding six months of last year. An unpleasant experience which has befallen a Melbourne dealer was described by the president of the Victorian Licensed Secondhand Dealers’ Association, in the course of his annual report. It appeared that the dealer recently walked into a city auction room while a motor-car was being offered for sale. The auctioneer was calling the bids, and hearing him repeating “Sixty-five pounds,*’ the dealer raised his hand to signify an advance on that bid. Accepting* the sign, as another bid, the auctioneer called, “Seventy pounds I’m bid,” and as there was no advance on that amount the car was knocked down to the dealer. Subsequently the new purchaser was given a bill for £l7O. He suddenly realised that the auctioneer, when calling the bids, had dropped the “hundred” and was calling £§s instead of £165 when he (the dealer) entered the auction-room. He refused to take the ear, which v r as damaged, at £l7O, and the auctioneering firm has threatened to prosecute him if he does not take delivery, but three months have passed, and no action has yet been taken, though the firm still has the motor-ca.r. There appears to be a nice legal point at issue. A reminder is given of the meeting to be held at the Borough Council Chambers this evening, whefn it is pro posed to form an automobile Club. An address will be given by Mir L. Ashcroft Edwards, of Wellington, and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance.
