RETURNS FOR' YEAR. PLANS FOR- SETTLEMENT. .TRADESMEN WANTED. (by tt-UjF.graph—pruss association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. The annual report- of the Department of Ipimigration was laid on the table of the House to-day. The report states that the total number of_ arrivals in New Zealand from the Lnited Kingdom during the year was II.JBB, excluding New Zealanders. Out- of a. total number of persons arriving 6752 were assisted by the New Zealand Government during the year. Thirty-three steamers brought out assisted immigrants. Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central) asked the Minister to state to the House whether there was any plan or system under which immigrants arriving in New Zealand were to be settled.

Mr. T. K. Sidey (Dunedin South) urged the Minister not to bring immigrants- to New Zealand at a rate taster than they could be readily absorbed.

Mr. AY. E. Parry (Auckland Cential) said tnat until the Government was able to provide our own people with land and homes they, should not embark on an immigration policv winch could only have the effect of swelling the unemployed.
