HARBOUR BOARDS.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. A conference of the Harbour Boards’ Association of New Zealand opened to day’, Mr G. Mitchell (Wellington) presiding. The president thanked the Minister for Marine for bringing down the Consolidating Harbours Act, embodying a measure the boards had long striven for. There were, however, many’ other matters which they 7 thought should be included. European countries wer© becoming competitors in the B.ritish markets with our produce and cheaper labour costs and freights favoured them. The stoppage of borrowed money for war purposes and the depressions at Home had severely’ curtailed the purchasing power ‘of the British people, and under the circumstance they could not look for a continuance of high prices for the whole of our but there was no need for alarm. aim should be to give .a mere efficient and cheaper service to shipping and shippers alike, which would make for lower cost of transport.
