, The many Hawera friends of Mr E. N,owing, of Wanganui, will regret to learn that he fractured a thigh a few days ago, an accident all the more serious by reason of Mr Newing’s advanced age. The injury was due to a fall within the house. A pleasant function eventuated at the Commercial Hotel on Tuesday evening, when opportunity was taken of saying farewell to Miss Lena Sehwass, who' is to be married shortly. During her stay in Hawera, Miss Schwass has earned lor herself a number of good friends, and proof of her popularity was forthcoming when she was presented with a teapot and bedroom clock by Mr. and Airs. Wilson and a set of jugs by the staff
