THE RAILWAYS.
REQUEST FROM WEST COAST. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. A deputation of West Coast members of Parliament waited on the Prime Minister and" the Minister of Railways this morning in regard to the completion of the GlenhopeMurchison railway. The Hon. J. G. Coates said that it would cost about £450,000 to complete the twenty-five miles gap, and more than a million extra to connect up to Inangahua. He was not enthusiastic about the possibility of the line paying when completed. He stressed the necessity of surveying for the Westport line before commencing any’ active work on that section. He proposed to put a vote on the in regard to the Murchison-Glenho'pe section. The Prime Minister spoke of the possibilities of tapping the Buller Goige on account of the coal resources, and fioni that point of view thought it should be pushed ahead as soon as possible. He was sure it would pay' as a coal line, and once it was constructed it would solve the difficulty of providing sufficent coal for Dominion requirements. The Government would do its best this year to prorude for the deputation’s request.
