VAST AREA SUBMERGED FIFTY THOUSAND DROWNED MILLIONS HOMELESS bt cable —press association—copyright Received Aug. 1< 1225 p.m. PEKIN, Aug. 14. Devastating floods, involving an appalling loss of life a.nd damage over widespread areas, have occurred in China. Many towns, villages and enormous tracts of country are submerged. Tientsin was in imminent danger of inundation owing to t-lie volume of waters passing seaward; but the Chinese soldiers worked day and night at the dykes holding back the flocd, '.thus largely contributing to saving the city. Westward and northward of Tientsin two thousand villages are submerged, and flood victims are pouring. into Peking. At Kalgar 4000 were drowned as a result of dykes bursting. Belated reports from the provinces of Chihli, Honan, Hunan, and Kwang Tung- confirm the widespread devasta” t-iou and the imminence of a famine. An approximate estimate of the totai drowned is in the vicinity of 50,000, while the homeless must number several millions.—Reuter.
