LOCAL AND GENERAL.
; It was announced at the., meeting of business men last evening that Mr. Mountjoy would be in Hawera to-day to examine the scales of business people. Mr. Sage, who made the announcement, was lacking in his usual fluency, and his halting speech conveyed the idea that there was something lie wanted to convey which could not be put into ordinary plain English. As far as could be gathered, lie was giving any who had scales which were not quite right a hint that they had better attend to the matter at once. Some of his remarks were lost in the volume of laughter which came from the audience when they realised the purpose of the announcement. The New Zealand Labour Party have approved, of the following Canterburv members as Parliamentary candidates. Those selected are eligible to go~ for selection ballot for any constituency in the Dominion : Frederick Riley Cooke, Christchurch, trade union secretary; John Kendrick Archer, Sydenham, Baptist minister; Christoper Renn, Christchurch, union sec-retarv; Herbert Thomas Armstrong, Christchurch, miner, M.P.; James McCombs, Sumner, M.P. ; Edwin John Howard, Christchurch, M.P. ; George Thomas Owen. Onawa, painter; Daniel Giles Sullivan, Opnwa, M.P.
