POSTAL CONGRESS.
TRANSIT RATES. REDUCTION FAVOURED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Aug. 13, 10.25 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 12. A resolution was passed in the committee stages at the Stockholm Postal Conference reducing the transit rates 25 per cent, to Australia. Mr. Kay, representing Australia, emphatically protested, but received no support. Mr. Gibson (Commonwealth Post-master-General) states that when the question comes up in open conference Mr. Kay will seek exemption on sea routes from England to Australia. If this concession is not granted Australia will have to consider whether to remain in the union. The proposal as it stands at present means that Australia will bo compelled to pay a disproportionate amount on mail matter carried, involving a loss of £20,000 per annum.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
