Sister McDonald, of Awakino, has been appointed matron of the Opunake hospital, and takes up duty on September 1.. Sister Davy will remain in charge until that date. It is understood (says a London cable) that Admiral Sir John de Robeck’s appointment to the GovernorGeneralship of New Zealand depends upon whether he is prepared to assume the financial burdens of the position. Air. John Curd, who died at Inglewood on Saturday at the age of 70 years, was a very* well-known resident of Taranaki. He came out to New Zealand in 1874 by the ship Waikato, and two years later he married Miss Alount-Vaschel, of the County 'of Limerick. Ireland. Air. Curd was engaged in farming operations at Lepper. ton before he took up property at Durham Road, where he resided for thirty years before he retired to Inglewood three years ago. Air. Curd leaves a widow, a large family, and sixteen grandchildren. ' Those of the family who are living are Will Curd (Stratford), Arthur and John Thomas Curd (New Plymouth), Henry Curd (Pukekohe), Norman Curd (Inglewood), Mrs. J. Corey (Durham Road), Airs. A. Allen, and Miss Curd (Inglewood). After 40 years’ service as master with the Union Company, Captain .J. T. Rolls, the commodore of the fleet, is to retire from the sea on August 23, when the Niagara arrives at Sydney on her present voyage. Captain A. E* Barlow, who was transferred from the Alakura Sydney, will take over the comamnd of the Niagara.
