PIHAMA CO-OP. DAIRY CO.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of shareholders of the Pihama Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd.,, was held in the Public Hall, Pihama, on Saturday, Mr J. Pettigrew (chairman of directors) presiding over an attendance of 30 members. Prior to the commencement of the business the chairman made reference to the recent death of Mr J. Stevenson, who for many years had successfully filled the position of chairman of directors; also to the bereavements suffered by his co-directoits, Messrs F. Julian and .J. S. Tosland. On his motion votes of sympathy with the relatives of the deceased ones were carried. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman referred to the difficulties arising throughout the year in the marketing of the produce. The directors had followed the open consignment policy throughout; though the final result had proved that the season had been in favour of those effecting f.o.b. sales, still the prices realised on consignment had compared very, favourably with that obtained bv companies following that policy. It was confidently expected that the final payments to supplies s would ho largely in excess of chat shown in the balance-sheet. A large quantity of cheese was unsold at the date of balance, and was estimated ; nt the low price of 6d per lb f.o.b Ihe recent rise in the market, if maintained, will-return a very much hio-her figure than that estimated. He 'congratulated shareholders on possessing a factory which was probably the most up to date in the Dominion.* The cost had been heavy, but the company wofld find that the maintenance, depreciation and insurance would largely recoup them for the outlay. He paid a tribute to the excellent results obtained by the general manager (Mr A. Neilson) and his staff, the main factory having the honour of topping the grading list for cheese in the Dominion.
Ihe motion was seconded by Mr J. S ; Tosland, and carried after some discussion. An election to fill the three vacancies on (he directorate resulted in the return of Messrs A. Allen, innr., J D Con a glen and ,T. F. Shepherd. Immediately die result of the ballot was deelare.l Mr TO. Mulligan pronosed. and Mr T. Carey seconded, that the remaining directors he requested to resign their position. The mover stated f na* in the event of tho motion being carried lie would offer his services as a director. On being nut to the meeting the motion was lost"by 16 votes to 3." Mr H. ,T. Xewman was reappointed auditor. Mr .J. S. Tosland referred to the arduous year’s work of the chairman, who had not soared time or himself in attending to the many extra duties that had devolved noon him during the rebuilding, etc., of the factory. He moved that the chairman be granted a special bonus of £6O in addition to the usual honorarium as a slight recognition of his services. .Seconded by Mr J. !). Conagleu. The chairman said that he appreciated the kind sentiments expressed by the mover and seconder, lnit he felt that in view of the low returns received for the season’s work that every £1 was required by the suppliers. At his request the motion was altered to one of thanks only, and was carried with applause. An interesting paper was read by Mr Crosby, which exhaustively dealt with the advantages accruing to the company and its suppliers bv continuing the system of supplying "hot water at the factories. Votes of thanks to the outgoing directors, staff, secretary, and ladies for supply of refreshments were carried bv acclamation. At a subsequently meeting of directors Air J. Pettigrew was re-elected chairman.
