ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
LITTLE BOY DROWNED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WAIROA, Aug. 11. A small boy named Billy Twist, aged six years, slipped into the river near Rangiahua pa on Saturday and was drowned. The body has not yet been recovered. SERIOUS INJURIES. WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. . A young motor cyclist named Frank Hyde was seriously, injured at- a railway crossing at Paraparaumu. Approachig the line he listened for the Napier train and, not hearing it, went on. . A special conveying territorials to Wanganui struck him, and his left leg was almost severed at the ankle, besides injuries to his head and side. He was taken on in the train to Otaki, where he lies in a serious condition. A GIRL KILLED. AY A [TARA, Aug. 11. An accident occurred last night on the Tikorangi Road, near AVaitara, whereby a girl named Marjory Purdie, aged 20 years, lost her life. She was in the sidecar of a motor cycle, and dn a straight stretch a collision occurred with another motor cycle. The impact was severe, and the unfortunate girl appears to. have been struck on the back of the head and the machine fell on her. AVhen picked up she was bleeding profusely, and a. doctor, who was soon oh the scene, said there was a bad fracture of the skull. The girl was removed to the New Plymouth hospital, where death resulted five hours later. Douglas Purdie, the rider of the bicycle, and a friend on the seat behind were, comparatively unhurt. KNOCKED DOAVN BY CAR. WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. A serious accident happened to the .young daughter of Mr. Berry, secretary to the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. AVhen crossing a tram track at Hataitai a car c-ame round a corner and knocked her down. At the hospital it was found that one leg was fractured in two places, her collarbone broken and a rib fractured. Her condition has slightly improved since. BROKEN COLLARBONE. REEFTON, Aug. 11. Through the overturning of a motorcar on the road near Ikamatua on Saturday, E. AV. Spencer, general manager for the .Consolidated Goldfields Company, sustained a broken collarbone and other injuries. The driver was thrown out and escaped with minor injuries. THIGH CRUSHED. REEFTON, Aim;. 11. Dominic Coll was knocked down by a truck and was rim over at Rolokolm railway station <m Saturday night. His thigh was badly crushed, necessitating amputation at the Reefton hospital. KNOCKED DOAVN TN STREET. DUNEDIN, Aug. 11. A\ r . Stewart, aged .15, married, working at Portobella. was knocked down by a. motor cycle in Princess Streetyesterday and died in hospital after an operation. ANOTHER AIOTOR CAR ACCIDENT HOKITIKA, Aug. 11. A motor ear accident on the Lake Kanieri road on Saturday evening resulted in James Park, Crown Prosecutor, and his wife being seriously injured. The car was being cranked when it jumped .forward, knocking Park down. It careered along the road till it overturned, pinning Mrs Park underneath. A second occupant was thrown clear, and was able to go for help. Both injured persons were removed to hospital. Park is suffering from concussion, and his wife has a broken collarbone and ribs.
