APPLICATION FOR NEW AWARD. (BY TELEGRAPH —I»RESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. The hearing of the application of the Ironmasters’ Association for a Dominion award in respect of the four branches of the engineering industry was continued before the Arbitration Court today. Mr. Bromley, for the men, said he hoped to convince the court that the last award had operated unjustly against the workers, and that the union’s demands were reasonable requests, sound in principle and sound economically. The union a forty-hours week, and MrV Bromley dealt with the general question of hours in some detail. An employer whose men rue on a forty-hour week had told him he would not revert to Saturday morning work, even if the men wanted to. The unions suggested 2s 9d per hour as the minimum rate. High wages were the secret of America’s success as a manufacturing country, and bettor wages hero would increase efficiency and help the industry tr> ! meet outside competition.
