IRON WORKERS
OFFER BY UNIONS. RUNNING OF NIVEN’S WORKS. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The hearing of the application for a Dominion award in the engineering trade was continued before the Arbitration Court to-day. Mr. Booth, of Booth, MacDonald and Co., cross-examined, said that dumplng from America had not been so bad of recent years, but it had happened that the Americans had undercut prices, and if the union’s demands were granted the industry could not carry on. Referring to the offer by the unions to take over the works, witness said he was quite prepared to make this offer to them: “If they are prepared to run Booth and McDonald’s shops profitably we are quite nrepared to enter into negotiations with them, at once. If the men took them over, quite probably they could make them pay where we can’t.” Mr. Bromley said that the Amalgamated Society of Engineers was quite prepared to take oyer Niven’s Wellington shops, pay a fair rental on the real value of the buildings, and pay the wages and work the hours they were asking lor in the present claims. Mr. Barter said his offer to Booth, MacDonald and Co. referred to the moulding shop.
