The Daily Telegraph says that it is believed to be most probable that ViceAdmiral Sir John de Robeck will succeed Lord Jellicoe as Gpvernor-General of New Zealand. —London cable.
Mr P. Luxton, of Pursers, Ltd., New Plymouth, has been appointed manager of Messrs Geo. Syme and Co.’s furnishing department at Hawera. The Hawera County clerk (Mr. J. W. Harding) gained much commendation for his work in collecting native rates, at the meeting on Saturday. Ho reported that as the outcome of two days spent wholly in such work he had roped in £205 10s lid and orders on milk cheques for £2BO more. He acknowledged the assistance given him by the agent and interpreter. The chairman said Mr. Harding seemed to have a faculty for getting in these native rates, and added that he was entitled to much credit for his good work. He undertook to compile a complete schedule of rates outstanding at 31st March. 1921.
