HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL
RANGER’S REPORT. The ranger reported re wandering stock, showing that 96 cows and 8 horses had been impounded. He stated that he had laid an information against \V. Hayward for overloading a five-inch tyre waggon, which showed an overweight of one ton. He added that he was watching lorries at the station and found they were rarely over the limit, and the drivers were reasonable. There were six cases of boxthorn growing over the roads in various localities. HOSPITAL BOARD. The Hospital Board asked the council to take steps to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. R. J. Linn. The chairman said the council had power to fill the vacancy until the next election in 1926. It was necessary to have someone watching the interests of the council very closely, in view of the many schemes before the local bodies. On the motion of the chairman, Cr. B. C. Lysaght was appointed. He added that he was sure Cr. Lysaght would be able to -watch the county’s interests very well, and would be a useful man on the board. MANAWAPOU BRIDGE. The Patea County Council advised that any steps taken with a, view to reconstructing the bridge in concrete would be favourably considered.—The chairman stated that they had no intention of renewing at present, but that the Patea Council bad asked them to agree to consult when the time was ripe. A copy was received of the petition sent in by certain local bodies in the north dealing with rating, reading, subdivision of native areas, control and eradication of noxious weeds, fencing claims,, and other cognate matters, and recovery of native rates.
r .The manager of the Bank of New Zealand wrote stating that there were many local body loans on the market, and that they would do their best to place the debentures of the council. The chairamn said that when in Wellington he had endeavoured to see what pould be done. They had to pay £2500 per annum for proportion of antecedent liability, and this in addition to increased hospital contributions meant a difficult position for the county. Regarding the amount of rates due by a native owner at Okaiawa, Cr. Walsh it was worth taking steps to, secure the amount due
Various tenders were received for ! supplies of asphalt. An order had been given for 15() tons, and the offer to supply by the British Imperial Oil Company would enable the county to effect a considerable saving. A copy of statistics of salaries and wages paid, by counties -was forwarded by the Pioko County Council. It was shown that the salaries of county clerks ranged from £l5O upwards, engineers £250 to £BOO, wages 14s to 15s 6d per day; overseers £1 per da>. It some cases, it was stated, the clerk acted as engineer.—The chairman said it was a useful and interesting document -for reference by local bodies. The chairman reported that he took part in the delegation re Stratford railway, and was emphatic in bis opinion that it should be mushed on as fast as possible, as it affected the province in shipments from the Waikato and delay in receiving them, and in many other ways. • The c-lerk reported an evasion of toll at the Main South Road gate by a young man with cattle, and added that notice hod been sent to him and the toll had been received next day. The minutes of the meeting of No. 7 Highway Council, which Mr. Murdoch attended, were received NORMANRY COMMISSION.
The chairman reported that he, with the clerk and solicitor, had attended, a meeting ol the commission appointed. He said that if the main road” past Normaiiby broke up the Town .Board would he faced with a loan of £ISOO. It would never do to allow such roads to go into disrepair.
