A ROUGH TIME.
EXPERIENCES OE OIL TANKER. CREW’S QUARTERS FLOODED. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The American oil tanker, Mercius H. Whitter, had a wild time outside Wellington on Thursday in the vicinity of the Ripple’s supposed struggle. The Whittier arrived off the Heads on Wednesday night, but in the face of heavy seas and gale the captain decided to stand off. The ship was hove-to all night, and all Thursday till midnight, when the wind eased off, and. the vessel, which was then sixty-five miles south-east of Wellington Heads, was put on a course for port. The gale c-ame from the south-west, with terrific rain squalls and dangerous breaking seas, mountains high. The collapse of the ventilators led to the flooding of the forepeak and of the crew’s quarters aft. The Whittier was in the neighbourhood of the Ripple’s supposed position on. Thursday morning, but. nothing was seen of any other craft.
