COOK AND HEENEY TO MEET. m) . LONDON, Aug. 7. The meeting of Bloomfield and Gibbons at Wembley on Saturday afternoon is monopolising interest in sporting circles. The meeting of George Look (Australia) with Heeney, the massive New. Zealander, which decides the heavyweight championship of the Southern Hemisphere, is also much discussed. It is expected, however, that Cook’s cleverness will enable him to avoid the New Zealander’s tremendous swings. TENNIS. DAVIS CUP. CANADA AND JAPAN. MONTREAL, Aug. 7. Canada and Japan have' commenced their Davis Cup match. In the first match Okomoto (Japan) defeated Wright B—6, 6—4, 7—5. The steady, sure game of the Japanese won against the brilliance of the Canadian, who was forced into errors on crucial points. It was a tense contest, and brilliant form was revealed. Shim id zu (Japan) defeated Crocker (Canada) 4—6, 7—5. 6—4, o—6, 6—l. Shimidzu won through steady play, but it was a close contest, the result being doubtful till the end. NEW YORK, Aug. 7. At Southampton, Snodgrass defeated Brookes, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Brookes and Schlesinger defeated Emerson and Lane „(5-2, 6-2 & 1 BOURNEMOUTH TOURNAMENT. LONDON, Aug. S. At Bournemouth, Fisher (New Zealand) beat Hillyard 6—4, 3 —6, 6—4; and Bayleir beat Ferrier 6—l, 6 —3. Both have reached the semi-finals. GOLF. HAWERA LADIES’ CLUB. The Ladies’ Club visited Stratford yesterday and played a match with that club. The weather was fine, with a high wind blowing, and the course was dry. In spite of the fact that Hawera was not at full strength they managed to win by one game. In consequence of this the match iwas interesting throughout and was thoroughly enjoyed hy all. Stratford provided an excellent afternoon tea, which was very much appreciated. Results are as follows (Stratford mentioned first): Miss Sangster won from Miss L. Quin 4 up and 3; Mrs. Hill lost to Mrs. Dickie 5 up and 4; Miss Wright won from Mrs. French 6 up and 5; Miss Sangster all square with Mrs. Thomson; Mrs. Gabiter lost to Mrs. Glasson 2 up; Mrs. Budge lost to Miss Wilson 2 up and 1; Mrs. Smith lost to Miss M. Quin 2 up and 1. Mrs Richards won from Mrs. Walkley 1 up.
