HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING. At the monthly meeting «of the council there were present: Crs. J. B Murdoch (chair), R,. B. Douglas, C. J. Ha,when, G. W. Williams, B. C. Lysaght, E. A. Washer, and T. Walsh. Mr. J. W. Harding (clerk) was also present. FOREMAN’S REPORT, Ahaipaipai Road. —A start has been made with the refacing on this road, but progress has been slow on account of the rain. This work would not take long if the weather would take up for a time. Brett’s : Corner. —There has been some gravel carted to this site with the teams, but very little has been done. Waukino Beach.—A start has been made on this job getting boulders ami shingle. The boulders are being crushed and the shingle is m, readiness for the tarring season. Tongahoe. Valley.—There lias been a very bad slip on the lower side of the road, and it- will have to be repaired With a breastwork of timber, as the cliff on the inside of the road is of papa and very high, but it is of no use doing this work in wet weather, for if the water gets into it it would take the whole lot away again. There is a track on the inside of the road that horses can get along. Morea, Makino and Nga-whine. These hills have all had slips on. them but are open for traffic now. Fraser r and Tnruturu Roads.—The scarifier has been at work on these roads, and a portion of each has been done. As regards the. work on the Tnruturu, this had to be abandoned in the meantime on account of the water on the sides, which made it bad for the engine to work. Glover Road.—This road is again full of pot holes, and it will have to lie scarified and sojxie new metal laid on, as it is one of the hardest roads in the minty to hold, and the only thing that will do any good is to tar it. Tempsky Road.—ln regard to the hill that the chairman and Councillor Washer and myself inspected, it was decided to lower the grade, and I have simje seen some of the ratepayers, and the money that was to have been spent o*u it they would prefer to have spent on the In aha hill, as theire is' very little milk carting over the first hill. Waingongoro Bridge and Main South Road. —The surface on the bridge is getting very bad again, and it has been too wet to fill the holes with tar. It seems impossible to keep a good surface on this particular spot. Laying broken metal and spraying with bitumen can be tried as soon as the weather is warm enough, and if this squeezes as same as the tar mac#dam, some other means will have to be adopted. GENERAL. The Heathcote County Council wrote asking the method adopted of allocating joint heavy traffic dues. —That matter, said the chairman, dealt with the Main Highways Board, as the council had no such joint arrangement, and the board would deal with the request. Estimates of proposals for work on main highways had been sent to the board at Stratford, showing a total for construction of £3570 and maintenance £2640, a grand total of £6210.
The State Advances Office advised that the loan of £SOO for metalling portion of Fraser Road was available, and asked for final application. The land officer of the railways wrote stating that the department had purchased 26 acres of McLean’s property on Turnturu Road, and asked regarding the amount of rates now paid on the area.—The information, was supplied as requested. The District Highways Council (No. 7a forwarded deed of delegation giving power under the Public Works Act, and advising that separate agreements in connection with maintenance were necessary and would be soon prepared. T. H. Walker and Son applied for renewal of slaughter-house liceflse, and the application was granted.
