DIPHTHERIA.
THE SCHICK TEST. During the winter months there has been a niikl epidemic of diphtheria in the Cessnock district (states the Sydney Morning Herald). This has engaged the attention of Dr. Wallace, of the Board of Health, who has made an appeal to the local shire council to assist in a special eli’ort to deal .with the incidence of this disease. ■j!3y means of a simple skin test if is possible to pick out individuals who are likely to acquire infection of diphtheria. This is done by injecting a minute quantity of diphtheria, toxin into the skin of the forearm. In cases in which this test, known as the Schick test, has proved positive, the individual can be made artificially immune to the disease by subsequent injection of anti-toyim Satisfactory results have followed this procedure. The Board of Health was anxious to know if the council .would be willing to co-operate with the department in applying the test on a. somewhat extensive scale among the children of .Gessnock, and enlist the support of parents to allow children to undergo the test. The council decided to assist the board in every possible way.
