SUGAR DUTY.
PROSPECTS OF WITHDRAWAL. REFINERY MAY CLOSE. EFFECT ON UNEMPLOYMENT. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 7. The question of the refined sugar duty was discussed by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to-day. The president (Mr Martin) said tlia.t there was not the slightest doubt- but that the withdrawal ot protection would be followed by the closing of the refinery, involving the unemployment of 4(10 men, who were receiving 14s a day, and competition in sugar firom Java, where the native labour was paid 8d to lOd a day. The duty represented 2d a week for the average family, while its abandonment would destroy an industry which was important in itself and in its relations with related manufactures. Another speaker emphasised the point that the question concerned not only Auckland, but the whole of the Dominion. It was decided to telegraph .the Piremier (Mr W. F. Massey), Mr T. M. Wiltord (Leader of the Opposition), Mr H. E. Holland (Leader of the .Labour Party), and the Hon. W. D.' Stewart (Minister for Customs) urging the vital importance to all sections of the population that the duty be and soliciting the support of the -three leaders. 1
