At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Edgar Neate was fined £2{) on each of two charges of having loitered in a public place for the purpose of betting. It was stated that since 1905 he had paid £329 in fines for breaches of the Gaming Act. WILD WEATHER. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 6. After several weeks of mile! weather a cold south-wester set in', and thickrain fell from an early hour, over 50 [joints being recorded at 5 o.m. Rain was needed badly throughout the province, and continuance, which seems likely, will he welcomed’ by agriculturists and pastoralisfcs. SPARROW SHOOTING. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 6. Ihe New Zealand sparrow championship was decided at Soekburn to-day in wretched weather. The shooting was of a very high standard, for at the conclusion of the twenty-one rounds five competitors tied with sixteen birds ear}]. These were: R. S. Taylor fChristchureh). F. L. Little (St rat ford), D._ Gorton (Southland),- T. Parker (Napier), and J Hiekenbottom (Ranriiora). Thev decided to divide the prize monev. In the shoot-off for the championship medal Gorton won.
