HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.

MEETING OF POWER BOARDS. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. Addressing the Power Boards Conference to-day, the Minister for Public Works (the Hona J. G. Coates) contended that the system of decentralisation in the distribution of power through the power boards would amply justify itself in a few years, when more , satisfaction would be felt in the system than if the Government distributed power itself. No doubt the expense would be greater, but the stimulation of local interest and the widespread use of current would be worth it. Power board legislation was not desirable tnis session, so as to avoid the opportunity of the opponents of power board injuring the scheme. The Minister declared that the Mangahao scheme would be supplying local bodies round Wellington by “the end of the year. The Lake Coleridge extension scheme would be completed in 1926. The Arapuni contract was satisfactory. He thanked the power boards for their co-operation in making a success of the electrical development in New Zealand, and paid a warm tribute to the services of the late Mr Lawrence Birlcs (late chief electrical engineer) in that direction.
