Mr D. Clement appeared for Velvin and Mr E. M. Beechey (Hawera) for tiie Acclimatisation Society. Mr Beechey said he did not press foir a heavy penalty. He would withdraw the charge of killing the bird. The_ magistrate said the law had been passed to protect game and people knew when they broke the law they hod to pay the penalty. . Sportsmen all knew this. He was aware that sportsmen were liable to temptation. He (his Worship! had no discretion in the matter, and^ would impose the minimum fine of £5, with costs 7s. —Arnus.
