HELPLESS CHILD.

FATAL BURNS. FOOLISH MOTHER, (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION-) TIMARU, Aug. 5. Neilson Partridge, the year and nine months old son of a farmer, died in the public hospital to-day from burns received on Friday last, when the mother dressed and seated him before the range fire in a chair, to which she strapped the child, who was given a comb with which to play. During the momentary absence of the mother the comb caught fire and the child was burned on the legs and face. He was sent to the public hospital, where he appeared to be doing well till yesterday, when septic absorption set in and the child died.

At the inquest a verdict was returned that death was due to heart failure, following shock and septic absorption caused by bums accidentally received.
