PUBLIC THOUGHTLESSNESS.
(To the Editor). Sii', Through the medium of your paper I should like to protest against wiiat appears to be an almost practice of piling one responsibiluv alter another upon the shoulders of our public men. If a man is kind enough to offer his services to the public for one office, such as the chairinansh.iji of a council, it seams to be taken for granted that lie can be chairman of every public and private body with which he is connected, and do justice to all and himself into the bargain. That this is an impossibility was very obvious to all with a sense of observation who attended the meeting of the Hawera Dairy Company on Monday last, and whicli was presided over by our M.P., Mr Corrigan. It was very clear from his attitude that the affairs of State are weighing heavily upon Mr Corrigan, and to impose upon his good nature to the extent of re-electing him as chairman for a further term is simply “working the willing horse to death,” and displays a great lack of kindness and consid"era 7 tion towards one who has worked so hard for the industry. When I moved the following motion, which moved the whole audience to laughter, one could discern behind the laugh, of the chaiiman the sincere wish that it would bo given effect to. The motion was: “That as loyal citizens of our country, arid in view of the many public claims upon the services of our chairman as. a member of the House of Representatives, this meeting -of shareholders of this company respectfully requests the incoming directorate to take this aspect into consideration when electing, its chairman, with a view, if possible, of relieving our present chairman for the greater responsibilities of the of State.” Thanking you in anticipation, I am, etc., F. GAWITH.
