QUEEN CARNIVAL. Added interest has been given to the Kaponga Queen Carnival by the announcement that the closing date has been definitely fixed for November 21. With nearly four months to go, the city and the farmers’ candidates may be expected to challenge the position held by the sports candidate as disclosed in the first count of votes. Judging from the continued enthusiasm displayed by the sports committee, headed by the enterprising secretary (Mr. D. Malone), Miss Crowley is still receiving a. big support, but the committee will require to- show no abatement of the energy which lias marked their activities to date, if the established lead is to be maintained. Their latest ventures include a sale of produce from a street stall in Kaponga, which was highly successful. A committee of ladies who canvassed the town with morning and afternoon tea also achieved excellent results. On this occasion, a sack of pine cones provided a novelty ..guessing competition, the winner being Mrs. Crowley, whose guess of 209 proved the nearest to the correct number (203). Future functions in aid of the sports candidate include a grand ball to be held in the Kaponga. Town Hall- to-morrow (Thursday) evening. Competitions, novelty, and Swiss dances are to appear on the programme, and a most enjoyable entertainment may be anticipated. The city candidate’s committee, supervised by Mr. W. Melville, has also boon very active, and is using every endeavour to pass the leaden Amongst their recent functions was the. social evening- tendered at the residence of Mr. W. B. and Mrs. Fearon, which proved one of the most- enjoyable bouse parties > organised during the campaign. A euchre party and dance was bold at Ivapuni on Monday, when a special guinea prize proved a gieat attraction, tlie successful player leing Airs. Roberts. A house party held at Mrs. J. Deegan’s residence, Awroa, last evening was also attended with great success.
