OKAIAWA.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The usual monthly meeting of the committee, held on Friday evening, was attended by Messrs A. Lees (chairman), A. Christiansen, O. Crawford, IV. F. Baker, J. E. Mortimer, E. Drake, and A. G. Fraser (secretary). The report of the headmaster (Mr T. Innes) showed the present roll number at 193. The average ‘attendance for the past four weeks was 171. The report further stated that the school had been very successful at the recent Hawera Vinter Show, the pupils winning seven firsts, eight second and three third, and had also won the James and Gillman agricultural shield for the seventh year in succession. The report also drew attention to several minor matters at the school that required attention. The committee decided to place on record their appreciation of the success that had attended the efforts of the pupils and teachers in agricultural work at the Hawera Show. The sub-committee which had been appointed to work up the district bay at the same show reported that the district had. again won the first prize. This committee further reported regretting there had been no competition, and also expressed disapproval of the treatment received at the hands of the show authorities. Although the bay was staged upstairs the use of the lift was not allowed them, with the result that all the exhibits had to he carried upstairs. Further, gre#it difficulty was experienced in getting sufficient timber to erect the hay, and to cap all no prize ticket was placed on the exhibit or the name of the district shown as in previous years. The committee further recommended that the prize money presented to the school should he earmarked for improvements to the school ground. It was resolved that the thanks of the School Committee be accorded to all those who had in any way contributed to the success of the district bay. It was further decided to call for tenders for ploughing, levelling and resowing the boys’ playground. Messrs Christiansen. Baker, and Mortimer were appointed a sub-committee to drawup specifications and supervise the work.
