—* ALL BLACKS. PORTER APPOINTED CAPTAIN. (11Y TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, July 28. C. G. Porter has been appointed captain of the All Blacks. Porter played his, early football for South Wellington School, which was then high in the school championship. He was a school rep. in 1913 and 1914, and in 1915 he went to Wellington College. The following year lie was in the country and did not play, but in 1917 he returned to Wellington and played.* for .Old Boys. In 1918 he was unsettled, and in 1919-20-21 was a Horowhenua rep. both junior and senior. There he played at centre-three-quarters. In 1923 he returned to Wellington and began playing for AthleticClub, captaining the senior team. After a few matches he was moved to wingforward as he proved too much of an individualist for the club selectors. At once lie lept into prominence, and attained rep. rank in this capacity, making a name for himself by his versatility and remarkable energy. Last season lie was chosen to play against New -South Wales in the third test, and this year, made one. of the North. Island team, captaining it in its encounter with South Island. Porter is 24 years of age and weighs 12st 81 bs.
THE LEAGUE GAME. ENGLAND DEFEATS LOWER WAIKATO. HAMILTON, July 28. The English League footballers played their third match of the tour this afternoon against the Lower Waikato thirteen-- at Ngaruavvahia, the- visitors winning by 30 points to 12.. GROUND FOR. LEAGUE MATCH. ’ DUNEDIN, July 28. The Otago- Rugby Union has issued a ; writ against the Forbury Park Trotting Club, the Dunedin Coursing Club, and the New, Zealand Football League to prevent the Forbury Park ground being used for the League' match New Zealand -against the English visitingteam on August 9. The case will probably be heard in the Supreme Court on Thursday next. The Forbury Park Club lias leased the park to the Otago Union with the condition that the Coursing Club ha.s the light to use it for three days during the season. The Coursing Club lias used the ground two days this year and has entered into- an agreement to let the ground for the third day to the Rugby League. The Otago Union holds that the Coursing Club has not. the right to make -such a transfer. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ PLAY. NORTHERN REPS. SELECTED. As a result of the selection match played at the New Plymouth Racecourse on Saturday, the following team has been selected (provisionally) to represent the northern group against the southern, at Stratford on Thursday, August 7 : - Full-back —O’Dowda (Moturoa). The Auroa team to play the icnresentatives at Manaia to-morrow will be selected from the following: L. Plant, 1. Kilpatrick, D. Barlow, L. Thoumine, V. McCook. Tv. 'Taylor. McCarty (2), A. Armstrong, F. Butler, J. Sliearin, V . Smart, R. Langlands. M. Bradford. The proceeds of this match will go to a fund for the benefit of a Manaia player. Mr Geo. Edwards, who unfortunately broke his leg in the soccer match Tvaponga v. Manaia. recently.
