SERIOUS FIRE.
SIX SHOPS DESTROYED. (BY TELEGRAPH —T*TiEH® jr'CATsO*' ' AUCKLAND, July 28. A fire at Papatoetoe at 1 o’clock on Sunday morning, totally destroyed a Mock of six wooden shops in the centre of the township, together with the whole stocks. The names of occupiers, and businesses are: Hawthorne and M.unrO‘ (butchers), G. Mahoney (grocer)., Airs. Morrison, two shops, (draper), Waldo Smith (plumber and ironmonger). The latter owned five of the shops and the sixth was owned by Hawthorne and Munro (butchers). The outbreak uas apparently discovered by Smith who, with wife and family, occupied the only residence in the block at Mahoney’s store. It spread rapidly, and the onlookers were powerless, there being no water supply ’owing to poor water pressure. The damage is estimated at £7600. The insurance on the six shops is £2500, and the insurance on the stocks about £2600.
