CHINESE FAMINE.
MEASURES FOR RELIEF. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY BIGHT PEKIN, July 25. The Famine Commission has addressed a resolution to Government- diplomats stating that it is organising the national campaign, but Government funds should also be made available. It proposes a surtax cu maritime customs. The funds are being administered by a joint committee representing the Cabinet and diplomats. The commission recommends that the funds should be expended on a loan basis, in that maimer establishing a revolving fund, which may be devoted to flood famine prevention when the present emergency is past. A Cabinet meeting resolved in favour of imposing for six months railway, telegraph, postal and navigation surtaxes to aid sufferers, following on the Ijnes of the 1920 famine surtax. The question of a navigation surtax was referred to Sliui AYu Chu for consideration. It is understood that the diplomats will be approached regarding the Customs surtax which the Government also intends to impose.—Reuter.
