PAR LI AMENT OPENED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT Received July 26, 11.55 a.m CAPETOWN, July 24. ilie Assembly met this morning, and Mr Jansen was unanimously elected Speaker. Parliament was opened this afternoon by the Governor-General, who, in his Speech, said the session was intended merely for., the passing of the Estimates and minor legislative measures considered urgent. Jnter-alin, the Government wilL repeal the tax on patent medicine, and amend the tobacco tax, which contributed to the downfall of General Smuts' Government. It will also re-enact retrospectively the Act controlling rems, which expired ou June 30. The Speech refers to the growing distress caused by unemployment, drought and locusts, and the provision being made for relif. The Department of Labour had inaugurated a scheme to remedy the continued widespread unemployment. The Speech also referred to encouragement to be given industrial and agricultural developments, and the careful establishment of land settlements. The estimated expenditure for the current year was tabled, totalling £24,346,000. — Reuter.
