A BRILLIANT DISPLAY. NFjW PLYMOUTH BEAT WANGANUI. After a contest in which play of -a very classy order was shown throughout, bright, crisp passing rushes among the backs, and keen dashing play amongst the forwards, combined with tackling of the deadliest and such as is rarely seen in any but a college match, the New Plymouth High School team gained a convincing victory over Wanganui Collegiate. They proved that their team is little if any inferior to the boys who represented them during the last few vears, and who have made such a fine record. The combination amongst the team, back au d forward, and their sweeping rushes, though checked 'at first by the stern tackling of their opponents, gradually asserted themselves, and in the second spell enabled them to put on a good margin of points. •Wanganui kicked off, and though play swept up and downfield in a series of magnificent passing rushes, the sure, keen defensive work was so good that only rarely did either team • o-et clean away. At length Wanganui swept upheld in a. fine rush in which Ormond was taken near the line, and New Plymouth had hard work to keep them out, Petty saving cleverly twice in quick succession. 'A free kick relieved them, and a faulty pass by Oimond gave New Plymouth, an opening. McKenzie, with a great dash, saved and Wanganui again went upheld once more, Gardner at fiveeighths showing fine form and a. nice, turn of speed. New Plymouth forwards iretudned /play downfield, and Iroin a .serum the ball came out to Alexander who cut in and sent it on to Jv. Fookes. That speedy player instead of passing as. was expected! side-stepped, and Ormond failiim to collar him, he raced over the line and scored a great try. The kick failed. New Plymouth kept up the pressure am* the forwards hooking cleanly the half sent his backs away. Alexander alter a nice dash, sent on to Crawford, who cleverly feinted and almost got across, being collared on the line ■ Wanganui worked back bv fine forward rushes and the backs getting into action, Scanlan ran up, passed to Gaidner and be, after a nice dash sent it out to Carroll, and a try was only averted by sound defence. New I lymouth relieved in great style, and securing the ball, Paterson made a fine dash and sending it- out to Mason, he passed to Alexander After a , nice cut in the five-eighths sent it to K. fookes, and a well-timed pass to Revell enabled him by a great dash to get over the hue. The kick failed. Keeping, up the pressure, the hacks again went downfield, and near halfway a slow pass was intercepted by beanlan, and that speedy player got clean away and scored a . good try. Canoll failed to convert. Li the .second spell New Plymouth attacked hotly till Gardner, m a very fine dash, got away an d looked as though he might score. He, however, passed to Ormond, who was well collared . Petty relieved with a fine lack to the corner. Wanganui forwards rushed up and a fine movement was spoilt by a. bad pass by Scanlan, and their opponents set up a great passing rush which was nullified bv faulty handling by Crawford. they got away and the ball came down the chain ~t backs to Maekay, who laced for toe ane, but was splendidly taken by McKenzie. Scanlan made a fine individual run, and looked likely to score He, however, was not supported, and play came hack to near centre, where Maekay, snapping up a bad pass, raced from there right clean away and scored a great- try.. The kick failed, and the score was: New 1 lymouth 17, Wanganui 6. Waimanui retaliated and set up a hot 'attack, and near the twenty-five (Alexander was hurt and had to retire. McLean went on and the blues maintained tne pressure. Good tackling however spoilt their utmost effort. ‘ They continued to attack until Paterson and K Fookes got away, and in a bright lush they almost scored. Scanlan saved, and passing to Gardner, the Jattei made a very nice run and passed to Ormond. _ The latter was well taken, and New Plymouth set up a not attack. Wanganui replied with a great passing rush, all the backs handling veil, and Ormond just failing to get across, New Plymouth beiim obliged to force.
