EXCURSION FARES.
' INGENUITY OF AUCKLAND PARTY A story illustrating that the people of Auckland are wide awake was related to the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union by Mr A. Gr. Mumby (Heretaunga), representing the New Zealand Poultry Association. In advocating that the Government should be approached to grant excursion fares to members of the Poultry Association when travelling to executive meetings, Mr Mumby stated that a party of 20 Aucklanders who contemplated attending a conference at Nelson applied for excursion fares. The request was turned down, but later one of the party had a “brain wave.” He suggested that they should travel to Nelson as a glee party. The suggestion was adopted, and upon application being made excursion fares were readily granted. The party duly attended the conference, but to* prove their bona tides as showmen they actually put on an entertainment at Napier. Mr Mumby contended that members of the Poultry Association were doing the country a service in travelling to conferences, and that they, were just asiftn.titled to excursion fares as minstrel troupes. It was decided to ask the Government to grant excursion fares to members of the Poultry Association, and the Farmers’ Union travelling to executive meetings.
