OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. "PADDY, THE NEXT BEST THING.’' The Opera House was well filled last evening when ‘‘Paddy the- Next Best Thing” was shown to a delighted audience. In book form the story has a charm all its own, lint t'ne picture version lias the added attraction of portraying much glorious scenery. ivl ae Marsh in the title .rolei gives a lifelike representation of the Irish girl, and is well supported by Nina Boiicicault, Haidee Wright and a number of English, stage, celebrities. ‘‘Paddy” is the daughter of Colonel, Adair, a dealimprovident old chap, who loves his daughter as a sou. and treats her as such. Then suddenly Colonel Adair dies, and Paddy, finding his estate hopelessly involYed, has to sell the Glian house and seek work in London, where she bennies the assistant of her uncle, a practising chemist. The picture is extraordinarily well done, very laughable in places and the scenery is really Irish. The supporting programme is excellent, and will’ he repeated this evening for the last time. GRAND THEATRE, TO-NIGHT. "MY AMERICAN WIFE.” Gloria Swanson was the big attraction at the Grand Theatre last night, when her latest Paramount stellar vehicle, "Mv American Wife,” was given its premier here. The scenes are laid in Argentina and the story deals with a young Kentucky girl, owner oi a racing stable, who becomes enmeiicd in politics and love, with highly dramatic results. The picture is filled with rapid fire action and is wia.lly engrossing. A love story of Bi> ims Ayics. Paris of South America. And the supporting cast: Handsome Antonio Moreno as a fierv Spanish lover: Walter Long again as a picturesque bandit king; and a host of other favourites. The programme will Ire shown finally to-night.
