ELTHAM.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (From O'ur Own Correspondent.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the school committee was held last night in the O.E.M.P. rooms. Mr. Ira J. Bridger presided. The others present were: Messrs. W. S. Heyes (secretary), F. T. Maynard, F. Michel, J. McKay, L. Dobson, R. Gower, L. Rowe and M. E. Bary (headmaster). Apology received from Mr/ R. Pepperell. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for July had been 361.3. The present roll number is 398. An average such as the present would, if maintained for the year, raise the school to grade 6. The swimming certificates gained during the year were presented by the president of the Taranaki Swimming Association (Mr. Moyes). During the past week Miss Blackie (physical drill instructor) visited the school and expressed herself in pleasing terms on this branch of the work.
A number of requirement. l ? mentioned in the report were authorised by the committee. The visiting committee (Messrs. Rowe and McKay) reported on their inspection, stating that everything seemed to> be in a. satisfactory condition. They recommended that application be made to the board for permission to use the shed near the baths belonging to the board and used for storage purposes. It was pointed out that the shed had not been in use for a considerable time, and that it could be used, with little alteration, for a dressing shed for the school children the swimming season.—lt was decided to ask for the necessary , permission. It was also decided to ask the board to erect a. tank on the roof of the school for the purpose of providing a satisfactory flow of water for the drinking fountain. The chairman and Mr. Robson were authorised to purchase a supply of mats for the floor of the infant depart - ment. NEW SCHOOL. 1 chairman reported that while in Wellington recently on the railway deputation he had taken the opportunity, in company with -Mr. O. Hawken, M.P., to interview the Minister for Education concerning the new school, and as a. result the Minister lias asked the board to furnish a plan including a dental clinic, and when this is received by the department he will bring the matter before Cabinet and ask for a grant covering the cost of a complete building. ” Accounts amounting to £26 18. s lid were passed for payment. Messrs. Maynard and Gower were appointed a visiting committee for the month of August.
LIBRARY. A special meeting of the Eltham Public Library Committee was held last night for the purpose of receiving the resignation of the Librarian (Mrs. Hooper). Appreciative references were made to the services of Mrs. Hooper as librarian by the members of the committee, and it was decided to receive the resignation with regret and lo forward a letter expressing the committee’s satisfaction at the way the duties had been carried ou t. Mrs. Pndeaux wa« appointed to fill the position as librarian.
