TO RESIDENTS OF HAWERA AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.
(To , the Editor.) Sir, —There appeared in the Hawera Star of July 7, 1924, under the 'above heading, a. notice by Superintendent Morrison to the effect that a member of the Hawera volunteer fire brigade had approached residents for donations without bis authority. With a view to dissipating the wrong impression that such a notice would no doubt give rise to' in the minds of the residents of the district, the Hawera volunteer fire brigade at its meeting last AA redn&.sday night passed a resolution that a letter be written by me on behalf of the brigade to you, Sir, for publication in the Star setting out the facts in connection with the matter. The member of the brigade referred to in the notice had the full authority of the brigade to solicit donations. A resolution on the minute book of the brigade to this effect is open to inspection by anyone. It is a matter for the whole brigade, and the member’s action was entirely in accordance with the resolution of the brigade evidenced by the above minute. As the superintendent has declined to accede to a resolution of the brigade that he publicly withdraw the notice in question, I write you this letter in. the hope that it will clear 'up the matter J in . the minds, of the public, and that it | will abundantly satisfy them of the j brigade’s confidence in. the integrity of the member in question.—l am, etc., For and on behalf of the Hawera Volunteer Fire. Brigade, AV. S. SMART, Chairman. Hawera, 19th July, 1924. [We understand that the matter is to be placed before the Fire Board at its next meeting.—Ed.] \
