MUTUAL HELP.
SUGGESTED TREATY. QUESTION IN THE, COMMONS. BY CABLE—PREBB ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received July 22, 11.40 a.m. • -- LONDON, July 21. In the House of Commons, Mr MacDonald, questioned about his letter in regard to a treaty of mutual assistance, said that the text of the letter would be published shortly in a White Paper, and if discussion were required an opportunity could be seized liefore the end of th esession. Sir Samuel Hoad asked whether communications to and from the dominions on the subject would be included in the paper. Mr MacDonald saifl he had not considered this. He questioned whether it was desirable, but was willing to do what the House required. Mr Thomas was subsequently questioned about Canada’s inability to get information concerning tliei Allied" Conference, and said that the fullest communications had been passing for weeks past between His Majesty’s Government and the Dominion Governments in connection with the cohferr ence.—Renter i PARIS, July 21. m. The newspaper Ere Nouvelle, the " organ of the Left parties, in defending Britain’s refusal to join the League pact of mutual assistance, says: “Frenchmen forget that nowodavs Britain depends on the Dominions as much as, and perhaps more than, the Dominions depend upon Britain. It is just as important to Britain to assure peace in the Pacific as in Europe. The possibility of conflict between United States and Japan looms on the horizon, and it is impossible for Australia, and therefore Britain, to remain indifferent thereto. The League’s draft pact nowise assures peace in the- Pacific because the United States refuses to adhere to it. If Britain accepted the pact she would be? giving Japan a purely one-sided assurance.”—Reuter.
