HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held last night, when there were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone) and Crs. Osborne, Burdekin, Morrissey, Townsend, Brunette, and Champion. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Reid and Goodwin.

The Athenaeum Committee, Opunake, wrote asking for the loan of 100 books, and asked the council to state terms. — The matter was referred to the Library Committee.

Mr. L. A. Taylor, for,Mr. Sheehan, wrote asking for permission to store hides in a shed at the back of Air. Donnelly’s property in High Street. The sanitary inspector, in a report, said that the question of where within the borough those trades classified as “offensive” under the Health Act should be allowed to he established should he decided.

The matter was left to the Health Committee to decide on a suitable area.

The application of Messrs Goldstone and Patterson to put up a calico sign across the roadway similar to that used by the Winter Show committee was refused.

The Waimate Plains Dairy Company made" application for permission to lay a 1-iin. water pipe into their factory on the corner of Princes and Rowe Streets.

It’ was decided to ask the engineer to report,. and the matter was left in the hands of the Works Committee, with power to act. A former resolution was rescinded and permission was granted to Mr. J. Mills to erect a verandah at the back of S. Hart’s shop, the verandah to be used ag a place for unpacking cases. The resolution; however, provided that the verandah should be supported by three iron posts 9ft. high, and the erected to the satisfaction of the inspector. / Cr. Osborne said he had misgivings about the matter, as applications of a similar nature had,previously been refused. COMMITTEE REPORTS. The Works Committee recommended that Mr. E. A: Pacey’s application on behalf of the Bank of New Zealand for an inch-pipe water service be not acceded to. The ' General Committee recommended : That application by T. W. Evans for permission to transfer billiard-room license in respect of premises in Riddi. ford Street be granted subject to the police report being satisfactprv; that whilst in full sympathy with the movement to urge completion of the Tara-naki-Auckland railway, this council is unable'to s end a- representative to Wellington; that the council support the movement in favour of daylight saving, and the member be wired accordingly; that application by Egmont Tourist Motors, Ltd., for sign re Aard agency, be* granted under the special circumstances; but permission only to hold good during the pleasure of the council; that application for extraordinary drain- ' age sewer to premises in Ramanui, owned by Messr s A. H. Jones and J. R. Nairn respectively, be granted'on the usual terms and ■ the. work be allowed to proceed at once; that with regard to the South Road near the school and the matter of a stock route, this he left with the Works Committee to confer with the County Council, with full power to act; that Cr. Morrissey and the Town Clerk be a com-

mittee, with power to act up to the meeting of the council on Monday next, in'respect of recent fire at the premises of Goldstone and Patterson, Ltd.; that the matter- of barbed wire on fences be left to the chairman of the Reserves Committee, with power to act; that the matter of letting- a strip of ground at the north end of King Edward Park for grazing be left in the hands of Crs; Townsend and Osborne, with power to act.

The plerk stated that the police report did not favour the transfer of the license for the billiard room in Riddifoi’d Street to the person suggested. The council therefore refused to grant the application. The remainder of the recommendations were adopted without comment. OFFICERS’ REPORTS. The engineer’s progress report was as follows: —There is no matter of interest to report this month. Tire work is entirely maintenance at, present. The supply. of metal from the Belmont quarries has again commenced in' preparation for flank improvements in Nelson and Regent Streets. The cld earth. path in Little Regent Street has been cleaned up and made level and a tow trilling improvements piade to remove the untidy appearance ol this street. —Adopted. The borough inspector’s report stated inter alia:—House inspection has been completed in Wilson ,'street, Aiorrissev Street, Surrey Street, ancl the iresidantial portion oi Regent- Street, necessary notices being sent to owners with reference to repairs to dwellings, drains, etc. Five persons were prosecuted under the by-laws, a fine being imposed in each case; total fines £7. One- person was prosecuted under the Dog Registration Act, a fine not being asked for, convicted and ordered to pay 7s costs. Ten dogs were registered during the month, the fees totalling £5. During show week traffic was fairly well conducted, cue accident being reported on Glover Road on op ‘ Satin day July 5. Police assistance was given at the showgrounds on both football days. I find the system of packing cars on an angle of 15 .degrees wherever there is a rush of motor traffic is very satisfactory, and 1 think it is a step' towards minimising accidents. Several' notices were served on tenants to reconstruct or alter fowlhouses, and several were warned about the condition of backyards, but, generally speaking, the average were in good co n cl i (, i o n. —Adopted. ~ The librarian’s report slated, inter Mia: —Four new members joined in June, leaving the number at -160. Sixteen new books were bought and a dozen added to replace old dilapidated ones. A visitor from Wellington suggests that a modern comprehensive dictionary should be bought.—Adopted. The Borough ranger reported on wandering stock as follows: —-June 22, one horse. Alorrissev Street, J. Cahill, owner; June 27, one horse Disraeli Street, R. Walker owner. —Adopted.
