BITTERLY COLD. {.UX TiCLKOHAptf—l-UKS-i Afct, jC'IaTiON. ) WANGANUI, July 21. The weather was very cold to-aay. Hail fell several tunes during tne atteruoon, and mere is snow on tne hills in the vicinity of the city. _ DU.NhDJxN, July 21. Ihe weather last night and to-day has been bitterly cold, with snow and sleet showers at finny lrequent intervals. The hills surrounding the city are coated with snow, and the higher portions of the city, have a light coating. CONDITIONS IN SOUTH TARANAKI The storm brought the cold snap to South Taranaki, and places near the mountain experienced falls of snow. Interniitent falls of snow and sleet were_ experienced throughout yesterday in Kaponga, and in. the country surrounding the. mountain, hut the ground wa.s too wet lor the snow to remain ior any length of time. The keen air caused people to anticipate a heavy fall of snow last night, hut the sky cleared and the night remained tine, bringing the severest frost of the season. The bright sunshine this morning presented people living on the higher levels with a magnificent view of sparkling whiteness, and lit. Egmont was clothed in a heavier mantle than for many months past, tiio snow being well down over the forest. In Hawera the frost was very heavy, and the cold air invaded the houses, in one sending the thermometer down to 36deg. Fahr. at 7.40 a.m. —4deg. above freezing point. Mr T. Lloyd informs us that at the I nit ha, toll gate the thermometer at 7 a.m. re'»ptered 40deg. Fahr.—the coldest morning so far experienced this winter. Reports from North Taranaki state that the cold day yesterday ended at 5 o’clock with a brilliant electrical display to the northwaird, fork lightning being frequently in evidence..
