ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
YOUNG MAORI SCALDED. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.') BLENHEIM, July 21. A mishap, attended by fatal consequences, occurred late on Saturday afternoon at Te Awaite whaling station, Queen Charlotte Sound. A young Maori (J. Shabrack), married, * with three children, sliniied into the boilingdown vat while skimming whale oil, which was still scalding hot, though it had been cooling for 24 hours. Shabrack was immersed to the armpits. He was conveyed to Pic ton Hospital in a fast whaling launch, but expired at 3 o’clock. DEATH OF TELEPHONE ATTENDANT. NELSON, July 21. Prior to being relieved at the Motueka Telephone Exchange at about 2 o’clock yesterday morning, Gilbert Everett, aged 18, son of L. Everett, of Motueka, went to a shed for benzine to fill a benzine table lamp, when an explosion occurred. H. G. "McPherson, who was coming on duty, rushed to the scene, and found Everett’s clothes on fire. He wrapped him in his coat to extinguish the flames, and then rushed to ring up Dr. Deck. Meanwhile Everett disappeared, turning no at the doctor’s. Considering his excessive bu rns, it is marvellous how he got there. He was taken to the cottage hospital, where he died early this morning. MAN CAUGHT IN BURNING WHARE. CARTERTON. July 21. There was excitement at Cross Creek eaily yesterday morning. A mkldleagd man named Steve. Cairns, married, his wife and family living in Wellington, occupied a. ono-roomed wham at the back of the engine-shed. He was awakened by excessive heat, and found the room ablaze. Egress by the door was impossible, and lie had to break the glass and wriggle through a very small window. In doing .so lie was badly burned about the feet and legs, and was severely cut by glass. The engine whistle sounded the alarm. The wliare was destroyed and all its eflecis. Cairns was later admitted to the Grey town Hospital. SUDDEN DEATH. HASTINGS, July 21. James Young McCracken, horsetrainer, 53. single, expired suddenly while visiting a friend last night. Ho had been in ill-health lor some time. His mother is living in the South Island, and lie has relatives in Wairoa and Palmerston North.
